Lean Forward Updates
A look at what's coming from the Lean Forward publication this holiday season
Dear Lean Forward subscribers,
The meaning of a given year will snowball as it rolls along, and the careful observer will notice the themes accumalate as it progresses. At the end of each year, I can usually identify an overarching theme that has woven itself through my experience of the previous 12 months, creating some unifying pattern and helping me see what the year was all about.
Mysteriously, I can see that pattern reflected in the art that stood out most resonantly to me (whether the art I consumed dictated the year’s theme, or the year’s theme dictated what art resonated, I don’t know).
This is why I love seeing the lists that come out at the end of the year picking the year’s “best” (that word doesn’t really work when referring to art) pieces of film and music. Often times many of the same works crop up across multiple lists; maybe this tells us something about a societally shared experience of the same 12 months.
The process of putting my own lists together is cathartic and revealing, and I’m exicted to share these lists with you all over the next few weeks. I really do put a lot of thought and attention into aggregating them each year, and the process is always fruitful.
Here is what you can expect to see in my Tuesday Lean Forward posts as we approach the new year:
November 26th: I will write about my favorite movie of the year
December 3rd: I will share my Top 5 Songs of the year
December 10th: I will share my Top 5 Albums of the year
Be thinking about the work that meant something to you this year, regardless of the medium. I’d love to hear something about them.
Another piece of the Lean Forward publication I’m excited to launch is The Lean Forward Store. I’m waiting on samples of a few different pieces of merchandise, but I anticipate the store going live in the next few weeks.
At Lean Forward, the aim is to inject a sense of wonder into a world where dogma has become king. I hope to create a hub where ideas are shared. Therefore, all are welcome to leave comments and share the content; let’s create a dialogue!
Best,
Jacob
